OK...today I removed Konqueror-embedded from the SD card and reinstalled it (into internal memory). Konqueror still runs out of memory, crashing. I'll make a post to www.zauruszone.com and/or the Zaurus General mailing list and see what's the norm for Konqueror for the Zaurus.

Hrmm...it seems Konqueror (desktop version) can't post entries to my blog...weird. I'd thought that I did the last log entry with Konqueror but it was so late and I was so tired that maybe I was confused.

Oh well.

I need to explain that last post. I wanted to compare Opera and Konqueror-embeded on my Zaurus. I opened this page to try to make a post from the Z using both browsers.

I installed Sharp ROM 2.37 but it didn't feel the same as OZ...it feels inadequate, so I decided to try to use some of the apps I used in OZ. Konqueror doesn't install using the .ipkg GUI installer. I had install it by commandline. I installed it on my SD card. I don't know if that was a no-no or not, but I soon found out that the Z runs out of memory pretty quickly using Konqueror...I dunno if its the app that's the problem or the fact that I put it on my 128MB SD card. I'll uninstall it and try to reinstall it in internal memory soon.

I took screenshots by commandline:

sleep 10 ; /home/sharp/bin/scshot shot

sleep 10 -- pauses 10 seconds before taking the screenshot

/home/shar/bin/scshot -- screenshot binary that comes with the Zaurus

shot -- name of screenshot file, .bmp format

I'll include these screenshots as soon as possible, here, in this entry.

Edit: here are the screenshots:

The first two are: 1) Opera, 2) Konqueror. The others are just screenshots of various tabs and icons.

Look at the way (on this page) the previous log entry is truncated. It's like that because Konqueror wouldn't generate a scrollbar for this long entry window. Since I couldn't scroll, I couldn't see what I was typing, unless I pressed the return key at the edge of the window. The last line is long, as I'd thought that Konqueror would make the window automatically scroll down when the window reached bottom...it didn't. At the edge of the right-justified part of the paragraph, it didn't scroll down and I was typing blindly.

Opera didn't do this but the window it generated was so small, it was next to useless.

The actual pages where the readership reads renders fine...both browsers don't seem to like framed HTML pages though.

Well, it's late and I'm tired. Our dryer broke tonight so I'll be busy tomorrow trying to figure out how/where to get a new one (I don't think ours is fixable). G'night.

I'm typing (more like pecking) this from
my zaurus using Konqueror-embedded.
I'm going to have to stop now since this input window doesn't scroll...can't see what I'm typing at this moment. :o(

I'm, at this moment in time, flashing the Sharp 2.37 ROM. After messing with the Zaurus and OZ 3.0 part of the afternoon and most of the evening, up until 10:45PM, I finally decided enough was enough.

Some things haven't changed from the last time I used OZ (back in May). There's still no backup app. OZ itself may be considered more stable than the Sharp ROM for some folks, but its not the ROM that's giving me problems. It's alot of the software. I got none of the versions of opie-screenshotapplet to even install properly. When installing the screenshot application, AQPkg would, afterward, report that the app was installed, though I could find not even a hint of that software being installed. This happened with other software as well. Opie-irc crashed alot while trying to activate it. In order to use it, I had to just keep trying, while hoping it wouldn't crash during initialization.

The only app I REALLY liked was Konqueror. This browser puts Opera to shame, IMO. Nice arrangement of bookmarks, looks cleaner, and seems more configurable. I saw all of this thru a week of heavy usage of Konqueror. Very nice indeed.

Well, my stock ROM flash is completed...lemme get back to restoring my old system.

Just now noticing that opie-irc tends to crash alot when trying to activate it. Seems that 4 times out of 10, the app will crash. I just keep trying until it doesn't crash. :o\

Allso, found a new and very intuitive Zaurus site: http://pages.sbcglobal.net/zaurus/.

Fluxbox works on the Zaurus, apparently (haven't actually tried it myself yet). Found this post at Zaurus Zone:

_____________

fluxbox does work. install tinyx, xmonobut and fluxbox. then replace your /usr/sbin/X file with the following:

#!/bin/sh

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/X11R6/lib"
export DISPLAY=:0.0

rm /dev/ets
touch /dev/ets

ln -s /usr/share /usr/X11R6/share

killall ztsd
killall rxvt
killall xmonobut
killall Xfbdev

/usr/X11R6/bin/ztsd
/usr/X11R6/bin/Xfbdev -screen 240x320 -fp /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc -logo -s 1 &

#should start window manager or app here
/usr/X11R6/bin/xmonobut -k 48 -t 1000 &
/usr/X11R6/bin/fluxbox && killall Xfbdev
killall ztsd

I dunno if I'm gonna try this or not. Most likely, I'm gonna revert back to the Sharp ROM (2.37). While I like OZ, I just keep having problems with it. Yesterday, I wanted to take some screenshots using opie-screenshotapplet, so I installed it, or attempted to. After an install attempt, it shows in AQPkg as being installed but I can't find the app anywhere on the Zaurus. I see no applet and I don't see it on the SD card when I tell AQPkg to download it to SD....actually, it did download to SD card once, but when I went into Konsole and typed 'ipkg install opie-screenshotapplet' the Zaurus kept outputting 'Segmentation Fault'. I really needed to use the screenshot app because I'm trying to take screenshots to post so I can get some type of online help from OZ friends and help from Zaurus Zone. I'll keep trying throughout the day and by nightfall, if I haven't made any progress, I'm going back to the stock Sharp ROM. :o\
